Our Kindergarten program is a unique blend of active, hands-on learning and sound readiness training. The children focus on a letter each week, stressing it's phonetic sound, upper and lower case forms, correct formation and words that begin with it's sound. Activity centers incorporate the letter in math, art, handwriting, language or pre-reading activities. In addition, there are weekly topic-related centers or standard centers (e.g. blocks, dramatic play, |

puzzles) that the children are required to complete. They are able to choose centers, thereby encouraging their independence and self-motivation as well as increasing their sense of responsibility. Language arts, math and reading readiness are approached through these active learning experiences as well as through a variety of circle time activities, small group and individual instruction.
The children refine their discrimination skills, practice their fine motor skills and build on their language skills. They work with long and short vowel sounds, rhyming words, word families, count by rote to 100, write numbers to 20, skip count by 22s, 55s and 100s, recite the days of the week, the seasons and months of the year, identify all coins and bills to $10, add sums to 10, identify food groups, animal families, the five senses, parts of a plant and the needs of living things. They are expected to complete assigned tasks, return materials to their proper places and to recognize, describe and share feelings.
Kindergarten children attend Monday through Friday, with Monday, Wednesday, Friday extended to 2 o'clock. This is a gentle introduction to a longer day and gives the teachers an opportunity for field trips, broader units of study and more involved projects. An Optional Kindergarten Workshop is offered on Tuesday and/or Thursday for Language Arts and Math reinforcement. The student/teacher ratio for the Kindergarten Program is 12:2 |
